The Gujarat Titans suffered only their second loss in the previous game against PBKS when captain Hardik Pandya made the somewhat odd decision to bat first after winning the draw. Once again GT struggled with his batting as Shubman Gill and Hardik Pandya failed to get going. These two are the mainstays of the GT batting lineup and if both lose form at the same time, alarm bells should be ringing. Wriddhiman Saha got the side off to a flying start but he’s not someone you’d expect to score the big goals. He tends to throw down his wicket after sitting down. It was David Miller, with the support of Rahul Tewatia and Rashid Khan, who saved the team game after game. When these players failed, it was only Sai Sudharshan who managed to bring the team to some sort of decent overall score. In the end, however, GT was missing at least 30 runs. Although GT wins most of its matches, we’re a little unsure about their hitting performance and think another such hitting performance could be in the pipeline. Perhaps they could drop Alzarri Joseph and bring in another batsman to help balance the team, but that will put pressure on Pandya to roll. Lockie Ferguson, Rashid Khan and Mohammad Shami are suspended in the bowling lineup. However, we think Pradeep Sangwan and Alzarri Joseph are struggling to lose their spot fairly quickly. GT won five games in the last over, including two with the very last ball. It just takes a bit of luck to change and we could see GT pick up a few losses at the trot.
SRH lost two matches to start, won the next five matches and has now lost two more straight away. It’s fourth in the table and also has a healthy net run rate but would love to get another win just to get back on track. All of the excitement surrounding SRH stemmed from the bowling lineup. Umran Malik is making waves around the world with his pace and seems to have improved as a bowler too. He now has the most wickets by a capless bowler in IPL history. With Bhuveneshwar Kumar and T Nataraj also finding their rhythm and the impressive Marco Jansen in support, SRH DC’s Seam Bowling stocks are undeniably superior. The problem is with their spin bowling option. Washington Sundar is injured and will have to fall back on his left-arm spinner Jagadeesh Suchith or bring in the leggy Shreyas Gopal. This spin bowling option could be a weak link for DC to exploit. Batting SRH has been pretty good in previous games as Abhishek Sharma, Aiden Markram and Nicholas Pooran are all in good form. Rahul Tripathi has had a few quiet games, but he’s also not someone to count on. The problem appears to be depth in the batting lineup as well as Williamson’s lack of intent up front.
