The Montenegro national team did not contest for a World Cup spot in the last qualifying round, placing fourth in their group. The team achieved three wins out of ten games (three draws and four losses) and came in nine points behind Turkey in second place. Two of their three wins came from a very weak Gibraltar team.
Furthermore, their last year’s campaign at Nations League was not good, losing five out of the six matches they played. Problems with the defense are serious, and they gave up at least two goals in five out of seven of their last World Cup qualifiers.
Gibraltar marked yet another absence at the international stage, appearing in the last World Cup qualifying cycle and going without a single point. The squad suffered losses in every one of the ten fixtures, letting in 43 goals- only San Marino did worse (46). The lone silver lining was collecting four goals, one being against Montenegro.
Unlike in the previous season, Gibraltar performed much better in the 2024/25 Nations League, managing to go without a defeat (1 win, 3 draws). Regardless, this performance did not suffice to emerge from the group, emphasizing once more the national team’s lack of ability to perform at an international level.
