The last time these teams met was in the third qualifying round of the 2014/15 Champions League season. Back then, Malmö won 2-0 at home and lost 2-4 away, advancing on the away goals rule.

In the second round of Champions League qualification, Sparta comfortably dealt with Shamrock Rovers, winning 2-0 away and 4-2 at home. However, in the third round, they faced a tough opponent in the form of Romanian side FCSB. The teams played to a 1-1 draw in the Czech Republic, and in Romania, Sparta took a 3-0 lead, though FCSB managed to pull back two goals.
