The team was founded in 1940 and managed to break into La Liga in 2014. The debutant not only managed to stay there (even though they were lucky to remain due to “Elche’s” financial problems), but they also established themselves there. They even managed to reach ninth place, but in 2021 they were relegated, finishing last in twentieth place. Nevertheless, there were constant attempts to return, but they always ended in playoff defeats. This was the case in 2023/2024: third place and failure in the playoff matches.
The current campaign has been frankly unsuccessful. As a result, they even fired the coach, for the first time in a decade and a half – Etxeberria was shown the door, reacting not so much to six matches without a win, but to the modest sixteenth place. Joseba was replaced by the completely inexperienced San Jose. His debut against “Cartagena” was successful: they won 2-0.
The club was bought by Turki Al-Sheikh, a billionaire from the Middle East who is actively involved in various sports matters. He clearly did not intend to stay in the Segunda – but it was only Rubi, in 2022, who managed to earn promotion. Moreover, he also managed to earn enough points with his charges in La Liga to retain their “registration”. But then a new coach came in – and in the spring, the team was relegated from the Primera without a chance.
In the summer, Rubi returned to the project. It seemed that this already proven recipe would work again. But after a prolonged excellent period, from mid-winter, there was a sharp decline. They were knocked out of the cup by “Leganes”, and then couldn’t win in seven consecutive matches in the Segunda. Even against “Malaga”, it was a 2-2 draw.
