The Azerbaijan national team failed to qualify for the 2024 European Championship, finishing only in 4th place in their qualifying group. In eight matches, “Milli” managed to secure just two victories—defeating Estonia 2-0 away and comfortably beating Sweden 3-0 at home.
After the clear failure in the qualifiers, the federation appointed renowned Portuguese coach Fernando Santos, who previously won the European Championship with Portugal. Although Santos didn’t succeed with the Polish national team or Beşiktaş, there is hope that he might find success in Baku. In four friendlies this year, Azerbaijan defeated Mongolia (1-0) and Kazakhstan (3-2) at home, but lost 1-3 away to Albania.
“Tre Kronor” are going through very difficult times. The team, which in 2018 denied Italy a spot in the World Cup and made it to the top eight teams in the tournament, has since fallen apart, missing out on two major tournaments in a row. While they lost in the playoffs for the 2022 World Cup, in the Euro 2024 qualifiers, they won only three out of eight matches.
The task of turning things around has been entrusted to Jon Dahl Tomasson, a well-known former player who made a name for himself as a coach at Swedish club Malmö. However, his time in the Championship was less successful. So far, his results with the national team have been disappointing. They managed to defeat only Albania in a friendly, while losing to Portugal (2-5), Denmark (1-2), and Serbia (0-3).
